We recently added a California Proposition 65 sticker and warning on our website to any of our supplements that require it based on a California law and for more information please visit:
www.p65warnings.ca.gov Lead and Lead Compounds
The warning pertains to supplements that possess compounds over the California Prop 65 limits. These chemical compounds are not intentionally added, they are picked up from the soil, air, and water in which the plants are cultivated.
Lead contamination in our environment is prevalent in the soil, water, and air which can all transfer tiny trace amounts of lead to the growing plants.
Even when a chemical on the California Prop 65 list has not been shown to cause cancer or reproductive harm in humans, but has been shown in limited animal testing, the chemical is now required to be added to the California Prop 65 list.
We third-party test every batch of our supplements as the USP-NF (United States Pharmacopeia and the National Formulary) set standards for testing of dietary supplements, and have set heavy metals limits only for arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury at the following levels:
- Arsenic (inorganic) 10 ppm
- Cadmium 4.1 ppm
- Lead 0.5 ppm
- Mercury 3 ppm
The FDA’s stance is that it’s not possible to remove or completely prevent lead from entering the food supply. The FDA, therefore, seeks to limit consumer exposure to lead in foods to the greatest extent feasible. When a manufacturer includes a Prop 65 warning notice on a product, it does not mean the product is unsafe.
California Prop 65 (also known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986) requires even lower limits to notify residents in the state of California.
This law requires a “clear and reasonable warning” to consumers for products that contain chemicals known to the State of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
The purpose of Prop 65 is to inform consumers of potential risks and allow them to make informed decisions regarding the products they use. We are providing this information to aid you in understanding the issue as required by California law.
